How to stop current active workflows and restart them with a newer workflow version?

Adam,

Do you mean killing the current active instances and restarting the
workflows from scratch (with the same data)?
As far as I know, that can only be done manually.

As well as time-consuming, that approach would be risky - because
application data may have changed in the meantime.
(eg the purchase requisition has already been released, etc)

The typical approach is to just let the existing workflow instances run
their course.

How can we stop current active workflows and restart them so that they run
according to the new workflow version? We are on ECC6
