John,
If you're using the standard report on ECC6 then the "*" should appear OK. You may ask the user to forward you the e-mail he got from the system and then you will have the shortcut file to analyze.

In addition, do you happen to know the workitem ID ? if yes. then run transaction SWNWIEX with workitem ID and method EXECUTE.

It might have been that the workitem runs a method for batch input not defined correctly.

Thanks for the fast reply. The problem is the user has emailed me a screen 
shot of his problem, so I cant easily the short cut. I am using RSWUWFML2 
in a standard way with no changes, where is the Command=*swnwiex 
p_action=EXECUTE;.... generated from, if the * is missing, would it be in 
the generation of it that is incorrect, ?
