ESS workflow

Friends,

I'm doing leave application ESS workflow. WS12300111.

Can you tell how the workflow determines approver?. Say B is superior of A.
Now how does the workflow knows that once A approve it should go to B? Is
there any std. rule to determine agent based on org structure.? Also what if
both A and B are positions.?
