send mail step - email address ?!

Hi Everyone,
  I have entered recipient type as USER in the SEND MAIL step in my workflow.
  How is the email address determined from the SAP userid ?!
  Is it from user master data (transaction SU3 ) or from the Automatic forwarding (transaction SO13) or any other way ?!
