inherited Container elements

Hi,

When I try to delete a container element in my workflow, it says inherited 
elements can't be deleted. The container element was previously there, but 
now I've disabled its import/export property and also removed it from the 
header of the workflow. Even then if I try to delete it says that 
information. Why is this? and how do I rectify this?  Thanks for the help in 
advance.
