Executing a ready workitem in a workflow instance from outside the workflow

Hi,
I am looking for a way to execute a workitem which is in a ready state and
present in the inbox of a system user from outside the workflow environment.
This workitem is part of a running workflow instance and is an activity step
composed of a standard task.

Are there any Function Modules available to do this?
