Debugging background work items

Hi All,
 
is there a simple way to debug background work items? I've tried to set
an external breakpoint for user WF-BATCH without any success. 
 
Background of question: we are using external list management (ELM) in
our CRM-system. All different steps within ELM are performed as workflow
background steps. 
 
Any help is highly appreciated!
