SWC_CONTAINER_TO_PERSISTENT how-to?

I would like to set a business object attribute to persistent but don't
know how. 
I want to store a value in an attribute. If that value is set, don't
get it from the WF Container. 
Else get it from the WF container.

Any examples in the system I can look at?

Any help is appreciated.
