Work Item details in UWL - EP6.2 with WAS 6.40

Hi Margaret,
Really you need ITS if you want to:
1) Run any IAC i.e. ITS-based web services
2) Run SAPGUI for HTML to call any standard R/3 transactions

ITS is integrated into WebAs 6.40 (ABAP stack) - so it is on the same
box as 6.40 - it is not "done away with" - but you still need to do some
setup/configuration to turn it on, e.g. one of the things you have to do
is go to transaction SICF and activate each ITS service you want to use,
including the webgui service itself. There are some other settings -
best to read up on the Integrated ITS help (should also find this in the
SAP NetWeaver 04 help) if you want to go that way.

Alternatively you can use e.g. an ITS 6.20 if you already have one.

Also read the launch execution section of the UWL help - if you don't
want to use the ITS to start R/3 transactions for instance, you can make
the UWL launch R/3 transactions using WinGui - of course then each user
needs SAPGUI on their PC. SAPGUI for HTML is the default, requires
minimal footprint on the PC (only web browser of decent release level)
and that requires an ITS of some description whether on the same box or
a different box.

Regards,
Jocelyn

Jocelyn,

Thanks for your reply. Very helpful - I found a page in the Help that
says connection to ITS is required, which is direct enough. But it seems
my portal guy thought ITS wasn't required for this system, apparently
because the general understanding here is that going to Netweaver "is
supposed to do away with" the need to use ITS (speaking generally
though, not related to workflow specifically). Since the system in
question is Netweaver, I am wondering if the reason we still need ITS is
a) because of the portal version - if we upgraded, we wouldn't need ITS;
or b) because UWL would still need ITS?

I guess my questions show my general ignorance of the SAP/portal
architecture. I'm really happy to have a forum where I can ask these
questions!

Thanks,

Margaret

Hi Margaret,
Sounds like you are missing config in the "Portal Content" section of
your portal.
It is here that you specify whether you want to use your ITS or not
(SAPGUI for HTML or WinGui for instance).
It is also here that you specify the host/port of your ITS.
Read the UWL administration guide in the SAP NetWeaver 04 help - you'll
find it in the portal help in a section on "Standard Portal Content for
End Users".

Yes you can hook ITS 6.20 to EP 6.x for this purpose.

Subject: Work Item details in UWL - EP6.2 with WAS 6.40

Hello all,

I wonder if any of the UWL'ers here can help me out. We are on EP 6.2
and have just started looking at UWL. Basic functions all seemed ok when
we tried it out with our CRM 4 backend which is running on WAS 6.20.
However it looks like the first delivered workflow we will need will be
using a backend system which is running WAS 6.40. For workitems coming
from that system we cannot display the workitem details (message is
"Action canceled / Internet Explorer was unable to link to the Web page
you requested. The page might be temporarily unavailable"). Our WAS
6.20 apparently has ITS implemented and the work items display in SAPGUI
for HTML. Currently we do not have ITS connected for the WAS 6.40 system
and I don't know if that is even possible, or if it is advisable.

Can anyone recommend what is the best way to go with setting up our WAS
6.40 system with our EP 6.2 portal so that the portal users will be able
to display the work item details? Is there any document that describes
the technical options clearly? I need to understand this at least a
little so I can discuss with Basis what we need to do. If it is
advisable to upgrade the portal to a newer release that might be
acceptable, but I would need to be able to explain the consequences of
not upgrading.

Thanks for any help you can give!
