Deadline sent a little late

We just had an isolated incident with a deadline being sent 12 minutes
after the time it was supposed to be sent. The entry in the deadline
table showed 13:33. The batch job (scheduled every 5 minutes) ran at
13:35 and 13:40 without picking it up but the 13:45 job picked it up and
processed it. Has anyone encountered a similar occurrence? What could
cause the job to not process a deadline passed entry?
