CRM documents

Hi All:
 
We are implementating a number of CRM/Image document workflows where we
have run into a performance snag when the number of offering line items
exceed 250. SAP recommends that we split any CRM offering documents that
exceed 250 line items into separate documents to avoid performance
degradation.  However, since we have only one image document per multiple
SAP offering documents, we would like to assign the image to all related
documents automatically. We have not yet determined how we will group the
related SAP offering  documents but we are assuming with custom code we can
create a field that links all related documents.
Has anyone implementing CRM workflows and imaging encountered a situation
of this kind?
Has anyone worked with workflows and documents in another application,
where it was necessary to process a number of SAP documents as a grouped
workitem linked to one image document?   In our solution we are using both
early and late assign  functionality.
