EH&S and Triggering Workflows

I have built some workflows in EH&S & recipe management around specifications and formulas. I built a custom object based on BUS1077.
I did use some of the many user exits (i.e. when a substance is saved) to create events for most of the workflows, as well as statuses and custom transactions to trigger the other workflows.

Which mechanism have you used to trigger the workflows? Status Management?
