Virtual attributes

Hello fellow workflow users -=20
 
I am trying to access a virtual attribute within a step of my workflow =
when that step is reached I get the error message Source (expression =
'&applicant.FirstActivVacancy&') of binding assignment is not available =
- that the attribute cannot be accessed.   I have checked and re-checked =
the binding I am certain it is correct.
 
Is there something that I need to do first with the business object or =
the attribute in order to be able to use it within the workflow?
 
Any advice would be appreciated!
