Binding on modeled deadlines

Hi all,
Hope someone can shed a little light on this:
 
The Task -> Workflow binding seems to take place when a deadline expires, which is throwing a bit of a spanner into the works here.
 
In more detail: The task has a binding of 'actual agent' back to the WF container. Before and during the task, the element has a value. When the deadline expires, it becomes blank (because there is no agent yet). Surely no binding should take place for a task wihich remains as is - still in status READY and still sitting with a user?????
