SapOffice vs Outlook Sap MAPI

Hi All,

I think Alan would be the best to comment on this but here is my take on it....

I agree with Thomasz that the magical number of 200 is not right. I very much
doubt that your SAP system will crash and burn if you have 201 connections.
Maybe 200 is just a 'rule of thumb'. I would say that the number of MAPI users
is dependent on the number of RFC Connections that your BASIS guys have
configured.

One thing I am surprised about is, Tomasz mentioned that MAPI keeps its
connection open as long as the user is logged on to Outlook. Tomasz Are you
sure? If that is true then that is awfull because the load on the server would
be huge. I would be very interested in hearing from Alan about this. What I
think MAPI does is that it will 'poll' the SAP system periodically. When it is
not polling then I do not think it is placing a load on the server.

I guess the constant polling can place a toll on the server as each poll as a
new rfc logon (at least i think so unless what Tomasz said is true). One thing
that can be done to combat this is to increase the polling interval for each
user. SAP defults this nubmer to 15 mins but if your system is suffering then
this can be increased.

When rolling out Desktop Workplace or MAPI to client I tend to work closely
with the BASIS team to ensure that the Server isnt suddenly inundated. A phased
approach is a good idea.

Alan, I look forward to your comments.

Regards,
