Forwarding with pop-up message

Hi all,
 
We are using version 4.0B and use workflow for processing EDI orders.  One
organizational unit forwards 75% of their work items from one rep to
another.  When work items are forwarded from one rep to another the
receiving rep would like a pop-up message to indicate they have a new item
in their inbox.
 
Has anyone addressed an issue like this?  If so, what did you do to address
this issue?
