There is also an 'executed by user' workitem attribute that is available in
the workflow template (&_WORKITEM.EXECUTEDBYUSER&), but I don't know at what
point you need to interrogate it?  Perhaps if you do a container operation
directly after the step you are interested in?

Create a background task that would perform the role resolution and store
its results in a multiline container element. You can use the function
module RH_GET_ACTORS to do this. Then you can use that container element in
both the e-mail and the next approval tasks.
 
That's not really nice from the modeling point of view, but you can't argue
with the requirements... One hint though: use the 'Not in workflow log'
indicator to hide the role determination task from end-users. It could
confuse them a bit.
