forcing workitems into error

Hello WF'ers,
I have a workitem that is stuck 'in process' in a background step. I have
determined the cause to be a continuous loop in my method code - the loop is
caused by some unusual data passed in by the workflow. I know I can change the
container data of the workitem, but is there any way to force the workitem into
error, make the container changes, and restart the workitem so re-tries? Is
there a better way to handle this type of situation?
