have you tried SO16 (shared office settings)? it allows you to conduct
system wide configuration with regards to sapoffice. i believe those
settings apply to the workflow background user (WF-BATCH) who in general is
the sender of SELFITEM emails.
i hope this helps.

Subject: Sending external Email
Hello,
Ran into something I have never seen before and was wondering
if anyone could help. Am working in a 4.5B environment.
Want to send a message from SAP to an external email address that
does not exist in SAP address management. Have done this many
times before and not had a problem - with Workflow using SELFITEM
and programs using SO_ function modules.
Here, I am receiving a error and the message is not sent unless the
Recipient email address I use is contained in address management
(set up my own address already). Works perfectly if I use an address
that is contained in address management but it has to be an exact
match (ex thomas.b.maue at pmusa.com).
Note - The address maintenance of R/3 users is carried out either
the R/3 User Maintenance (Transaction SU01) or the Private
office settings (Transaction SO12).
Is there a Basis setting or a user exit that controls this cross-
reference to address management? Have checked OSS but did not
find anything.
Thank you,
Thomas Maue
