Inbound MATMAS01 via ALE

I have two questions for updating the material master by IDOCs thru ALE from an external system.
 
1. I want to update a custom table at the same time when the material master gets updated. Has anyone used the user exit with the standard IDOC MATMAS01 to do this?
 
2. The incoming IDOC MATMAS01 contains the segment E1MTXHM and the child segment E1MTXLM with the fields populated correctly. This does not update the Basic Data Text for the material. Is it true that the text does not get updated in background mode? If anyone has implemented this, can they please share?
