Work Items in Error

In general, how does one go about correcting workitems that are in error.  WE
have an AP workflow implemented here and a piece of its functionality is not
working in production.   That functionality is when an AP clerk can't process
the workitem, they do a change assignment to route it to another AP clerk.  So
when the AP clerks go to use that functionality, the workitem errors and leaves
their inbox and is routed to the workflow administrator.
