[Olympus] OLYMPUS tasks and responsibilities

Dear Colleagues,
As promised I have compiled a list of tasks and "in-kind"
contributions which could be made. Please let me know where you can
help or if there are other comments or suggestions.
From Uwe's list of tasks presented at the meeting I have reformatted
the list slightly and present it below. As I understand Uwe's list
the first cost is for equipment or material followed by the cost for
external labour. Under "Design" and "Construction" is the number of
man-months required and the groups involved in these tasks.

As Uwe said in his talk there are a number of areas where "in-kind"
contributions can be made. In particular if institutions other than
DESY could design, buy, or manufacture any of the items that would
reduce the total cost to DESY. Similarly if manpower could be sent to
DESY to assist with any of the tasks that would also reduce the cost.
At the meeting we discussed a number of items where such savings could
be made.
1 + 2 Water cooled cables and manifolds might be reused from BLAST
experiment.
2 Bus bars from ZEUS might reduce the cost of cabling to magnet power
supply.
4 Polarity switches - could be manufactured at Bonn.
5 Power and signal cables might be reused from BLAST experiment.
6 Quadrupoles - could be produced elsewhere ?
7 Kicker and septa are likely a DESY responsibility ?
8 Valves - possibly there are spares at DESY ?
9 Synchroton radiation absorbers are probably best designed at DESY
but maybe can be manufactured elsewhere.
10 Target chamber, vacuum system inside detector region, and
connection to DORIS ring would be taken on by MIT.
11 Quadrupole chambers could be produced elsewhere ?
Manpower intensive tasks like 12-15, 17-19 would benefit from
technical assistance from outside institutions providing manpower to
work under DESY supervision.
20-21 Installing OLYMPUS should certainly involve technicians and
students from all institutes. MIT would send engineers to supervise
and students to help assemble and cable the detector. This would be
done together with DESY engineers and crane operators. Also
electronics has to be installed and tests performed which should be a
collaboration responsibility.
Cheers,
Douglas
