DESCRIPTION: Ethnomusicologist Ranko Stevanovic will present the results of
several years of his on-site research, illustrated with original sound
recordings and photographs, discussing an area of folk heritage which has
not been the focus of ethnomusicologists in the past. He will explore in
detail the melody, rhythm, harmony, form, and function of this particularly
articulated speech of shepherds, their manner of communication with
animals, in addition to their use of bells. A thorough analysis is
undoubtedly justified, in view of the fact that the sheperds' primitive
musical exchange gave rise to the development of numerous subsequent vocal
and instrumental forms.

About the lecturer
Ranko Stevanovic obtained his M.A. degree at the Department of
Ethnomusicology of the Belgrade Music Academy. He is the author of several
papers and has lectured at international meetings of ethnomusicologists.

children's games and songs. Ranko Stevanovic has been living in Boston, MA,
since 2000, and works with the Family Music

Education.
