From milos at MIT.EDU Thu Apr 11 21:51:05 2002 From: milos at MIT.EDU (Milos Popovic) Date: Thu, 11 Apr 2002 21:51:05 -0400 Subject: A Lecture in Ethnomusicology Message-ID: MIT Organization of Serbian Students (MOST) invites you to a lecture on: Musical Exchange of Shepherds in South-Eastern Serbia (Relic of An Ancient Musical Practice) DATE:Saturday, April 20th 2002. TIME:6:30pm LOCATION: MIT Room 6-120 LANGUAGE: English. COST: Free. DESCRIPTION: Ethnomusicologist Ranko Stevanovic will present the results of several years of his on-site research, illustrated with original sound recordings and photographs, discussing an area of folk heritage which has not been the focus of ethnomusicologists in the past. He will explore in detail the melody, rhythm, harmony, form, and function of this particularly articulated speech of shepherds, their manner of communication with animals, in addition to their use of bells. A thorough analysis is undoubtedly justified, in view of the fact that the sheperds' primitive musical exchange gave rise to the development of numerous subsequent vocal and instrumental forms. About the lecturer Ranko Stevanovic obtained his M.A. degree at the Department of Ethnomusicology of the Belgrade Music Academy. He is the author of several papers and has lectured at international meetings of ethnomusicologists. Additionally, he has collected and published anthologies of traditional children's games and songs. Ranko Stevanovic has been living in Boston, MA, since 2000, and works with the Family Music Makers on Early Children's Music Education. ************************* More information about MOST can be found at . ************************* Information about mostnews at mit.edu mailing list . It's an annual event where students from various corners of the world present their culture to the MIT community in a casual fair setting. I invite you to visit our booth and presentation on Serbia and Montenegro. We will be serving several kinds of Serbian food for very cheap (thanks to MIT subsidies), and our "cevapcici" meat rolls have always disappeared before the half of the day was over, so this time we're preparing an extra stock :). We'll also have a slideshow and exhibited picture books, and we'll play traditional music from various regions and periods. We're also lucky to be represented in the International Fashion Show, where people of various cultures will display their national costumes. I hope you'll be able to come at some point during the day, and visit our, and of course all other nations represented. See you then! (for MOST,) Milos PS. If you can't make it for long, shoot for lunch time, or Fashion Show time (4:30pm); those will be the two hits. :)
