Something like that. I use the zsh precmd hook to do:

  [[ -n $zsh410 && -n $TTY && -n $terminfo ]] &&
    print -n "$terminfo[rmacs]$terminfo[sgr0]" > $TTY

Similarly, somewhere else I also have a "tput cnorm" (I don't know
why at a different place).

Note that buggy programs may also change tty settings, so that
I also use zsh's "ttyctl -f".
