The vast majority of cancer-related deaths are associated not with the primary tumor itself, but with the multitude of metastatic lesions that later occur throughout the body. Disseminated metastatic cancers of the peritoneum, such as ovarian cancer, are particularly problematic, as metastatic nodules spread throughout the numerous different surfaces of the gut. These lesions are typically too small and widespread to detect and study, presenting a major barrier in the development of improve therapies in the treatment of metastatic ovarian cancer. We are pursing a quantitative microscale imaging approach incorporating advanced models of cancer, new chemical probes to visualize treatment resistance, and high-throughput, high-content imaging to build comprehensive spatiotemporal maps of treatment response. Advanced imaging methods and new imaging techniques under development will hopefully open the door to personalized medicine approaches for this otherwise fatal cancer.
