Vibrational analysis of macromolecules and reaction intermediates for the masses: New developments in cryogenic ion spectroscopy

Mark Johnson, Yale University

Tuesday, November 2, 2010

 12:00 – 1:00 p.m.

We describe a new instrument in which highly resolved vibrational spectra are obtained for a wide variety of singly and doubly charged cations and anions using H2 tagging in the single photon regime. The hydrogen is attached to electrospray-generated ions in a 10K RF quadrupole (Paul) trap using a pulsed mixture of helium and hydrogen. Spectra are obtained using a double-focusing time-of-flight photogragmentation mass spectrometer, and are surveyed over the 600 - 4400 cm-1 range. The individual contributions of C=O oscillators in peptide oligomers are clearly resolved.
