Small molecular fluorescent sensors for imaging zinc in biology

April 12, 2005
12:00 - 1:00 p.m.

Abstract

Zinc is ubiquitous in biology and essential for a number of processes
ranging from enzymatic catalysis to the regulation of DNA repair and
apoptosis, and is a proposed modulator of neurotransmission.
Motivated to investigate the role of this ion in neurobiology, we
design small molecule fluorescent Zn(II) probes for use in biological
samples. The synthesis, characterization and biological imaging
applications of several new fluorescein-based Zn(II) sensors, which
display fluorescence enhancement upon Zn(II) coordination, will be
described.
