Good Morning:
Information Services and Technology (IS&T) is pleased to announce
limited support for the BlackBerry 8830 World Edition via Verizon
Wireless and Sprint. Limited support includes MIT email via BlackBerry
Internet Services (BIS) and TechTime Calendar synchronization via
Nexthaus's SyncJe for BlackBerry (over-the-air synchronization).
WHO SHOULD USE AND WHY
--------------------------------------------------------
- The BlackBerry 8830 World Edition is for smartphone users who travel
internationally and require access to MIT email, TechTime Calendar
sync, and web browsing. Unlike similar smartphones, BlackBerry data
plans offer users unlimited data usage at a fixed monthly price.
NOTABLE FEATURES
--------------------------------------------------------
- Push Mail technology, which makes it possible for the device to
continuously receive incoming email without user interaction.
- Unlimited international data roaming at a fixed price.
- High-Speed EV-DO data connection available nationally with Verizon
Wireless and Sprint.
- Great power management with low power consumption processes,
extending battery beyond what is available with similar smartphones.
- Limited over-the-air synchronization of the MIT TechTime Calendar.
KNOWN ISSUES
--------------------------------------------------------
- BlackBerry Internet Services do not offer a true two-way IMAP client
with MIT's email. If you mark a message as read or deleted, it may NOT
send those changes back to MIT's IMAP mail servers. You will need to
mark or delete the message again when you check mail from your desktop
or laptop computer. Users will not be able to view email messages
within the IMAP subfolders except for the IMAP Inbox.
- Some attachment files cannot be opened even though the BlackBerry
device supports the attachment type. Users should not rely exclusively
on BlackBerry email to view and edit attachments.
- MIT TechTime™ calendar synchronization can be performed over-the-air
using SyncJE, a third-party application. You may encounter problems
with this method, depending on the amount of calendar data that is
synchronized.
HOW TO OBTAIN
--------------------------------------------------------
The BlackBerry 8830 World Edition can be purchased from either Verizon
Wireless or Sprint via MIT ECAT (http://web.mit.edu/ecat/).
Nexthaus's SyncJe for BlackBerry is available for use by the MIT
