[COUNTING THE DEAD IN IRAQ]
Burnham reports the grim details of his efforts to document civilian
deaths in Iraq.
SPEAKER:
Gilbert M. Burnham
Co-director, Center for Refugee and Disaster Response, Johns Hopkins
Bloomberg School of Public Health, Johns Hopkins University

[QUOTE]
"Our findings show that deaths among civilians have risen to very
serious proportions. The nature of the violence is changing -- car bombs
are increasing -- but gunfire remains the major cause of death. The
deterioration of the health system and environment may now be starting
to result in increased mortality."

[THE PERFECT LENS: RESOLUTION BEYOND THE LIMITS OF WAVELENGTH]
Pendry provides insights into the physics of light and the surprising
concept of "negative refraction."
SPEAKER:
John Pendry
Chair, Theoretical Solid State Physics Faculty, Department of Physics,
Imperial College London

[QUOTE]
"This wavelength limit [to resolving lines on a microchip] is now
becoming quite serious. We have this huge object 'the photon' which is
blundering around, and can't see anything smaller than 500 nanometers,
interacting with electrons, which are confined to wires a few tens of
nanometers across."

The Fourth Annual LINC International Conference
Technology-Enabled Education: A Catalyst for Positive Change
The 2007 LINC conference in Jordan aims to bring together international
experts involved in the delivery of technology-enabled learning and
'e-learning' to emerging regions of the world, especially to underserved
communities. Her Majesty Queen Rania Al-Abdullah of Jordan is patron of
the conference, and speakers will include regional ministers of
education, university rectors from both within and without the Middle
East, and a wide array of international experts and innovators in the
field of distance and e-learning technologies. There will be three major
focuses at the conference this year: cross-border collaboration in
e-Learning; open source educational content; and technology-enabled
education as a catalyst for positive educational change. MIT LINC is a
consortium of educators from around the world who are interested in
using these new technologies to help their countries increase access to
quality education for a larger percentage of the population.
