Hi Claes,
We've been running a production version of the software at MITRE (where
the code was originally developed) for almost a year now, and you can
see it running at:
https://id.mitre.org/connect/
It's not at huge scale yet but it's been very solid, and we've built it
on top of scalable technologies like Spring and JPA so that it can grow
with the deployment. That version is running against a MySQL database.
The MIT Kerberos and Internet Trust consortium has also recently just
set up a test server for interop testing, which you can use to try
things out "live" (and it uses a HSQL database on disk):

We're also in the process of setting up something at MIT. There are a
number of prototype deployments that have used this software as well,
from one-time experiments to longer running installations on private
networks.
