World Bank, responsible for managing the Bank's human development
activities with regard to education, health, nutrition, population and
social protection. She also worked on the Bank's approach to the social
dimension of globalization, including human rights. Dr. Ramphele is a
medical doctor who also holds degrees in social anthropology and public
health. She started her career as a student activist in South Africa's
Black Consciousness Movement, and established a community health program
during the period (1977 to 1984) when she was banished to the Northern
Province of Lenyenye. She subsequently worked as a doctor, civil rights
leader, community development worker, academic researcher and university
administrator. The first black woman to serve as Vice-Chancellor at a
South African university-the University of Cape Town-Dr. Ramphele serves on
the boards of several corporations and NGOs. She is the author of an
autobiography, Mamphela Ramphele: A Life; A Bed Called Home, on life in
migrant labor hostels in Cape Town; and Restoring the Land, on ecological
