Dr. Ramphele was until recently one of the four managing directors of the 
World Bank, responsible for managing the Bank's human development 
activities with regard to education, health, nutrition, population and 
social protection.  She also worked on the Bank's approach to the social 
dimension of globalization, including human rights.  Dr. Ramphele is a 
medical doctor who also holds degrees in social anthropology and public 
health.  She started her career as a student activist in South Africa's 
Black Consciousness Movement, and established a community health program 
during the period (1977 to 1984) when she was banished to the Northern 
Province of Lenyenye.  She subsequently worked as a doctor, civil rights 
leader, community development worker, academic researcher and university 
administrator.  The first black woman to serve as Vice-Chancellor at a 
South African university-the University of Cape Town-Dr. Ramphele serves on 
the boards of several corporations and NGOs.  She is the author of an 
autobiography, Mamphela Ramphele: A Life; A Bed Called Home, on life in 
migrant labor hostels in Cape Town; and Restoring the Land, on ecological 
challenges facing post-apartheid South Africa.
