Constructing the Rule of Law: Public Security, Justice and Democracy Building
Arturo Alvarado, PHRJ Research Fellow
Thursday May 13, 2004
4:30-6:00 p.m.
E38-615, 292 Main Street, Kendall Square
During the mid 1990s several regimes throughout the world, especially those
in developing areas or transitional economies, were undergoing a clear
process of democratization, although this process was not completely
successful according to several standards. These new democracies developed
a peculiar political outcome where civil, political and human rights are
not completely fulfilled. This wave of crime and human and civil rights
abuses threatens the consolidation of a new rule of law and the fulfillment
of complete democratic rights for citizens. Please join us for a discussion
of the role of justice in regimes undergoing democratic transition.
