Resources for Postdocs in 2022

Dear Postdoctoral Scholars,

Happy New Year!  I hope 2022 is healthy and productive for all, in spite of the pandemic’s recent setbacks.  As the new year starts, I want to remind you of some of the many MIT resources that can help postdocs advance their careers, and meet challenges that might arise.

The MIT Postdoctoral Association (PDA) is a postdoc-led group that creates social and professional development activities, and provides information and advocacy related to the postdoctoral experience. The PDA’s monthly open meeting occurs TODAY at noon via zoom, and all postdocs are encouraged to attend:  https://mit.zoom.us/j/96956637192

The Independent Activities Period (IAP) occurs through January, and includes activities and mini-courses open to postdocs, students, faculty and staff. IAP is a great opportunity to explore a new interest, or to teach a course/activity for others. More information: https://elo.mit.edu/iap/

Several IAP workshops are organized by MIT’s Career Advising and Professional Development (CAPD), which offers workshops and individual advising to all postdocs throughout the year. The CAPD postdoc adviser can help you explore career options and prepare for the job market. More information: https://capd.mit.edu/channels/postdocs/

MIT’s successful endowment return in 2021 made it possible for the Institute to offer an increase in compensation for eligible postdoctoral scholars (associates and fellows) with active appointments on Dec. 1, 2021, and we are working to integrate a comparable increase into the minimum postdoc salary requirements. Applications to MIT’s Hardship Fund are open to any staff/postdocs who are experiencing an immediate or temporary financial hardship due to a sudden or non-recurring emergency. Eligible staff/postdocs may receive up to $1500 to help meet the needs created by the hardship. More information: https://hr.mit.edu/worklife/hardship-fund

The MIT Center for Work Life and Well Being offers a wide range of services and supports for staff and postdoctoral scholars, including mental health and behavioral services, family and childcare resources and legal and financial resources.
