Announcements and events from the Boston Postdoctoral Association

Hi Boston postdocs,

We have exciting news we’d like to share, and we’d also like to catch you up on some recent developments and upcoming events for postdocs in the Boston region.

- Firstly, we’re extremely excited to announce that the Boston Postdoctoral Association has been approved by the IRS as a 501(c)6 nonprofit organization, beginning a new era as the Boston Postdoctoral Association, Inc. This represents years of work by many dedicated volunteers, and we’re extremely grateful for the efforts of all involved. This is a massive step forward as an independent organization for postdoctoral advocacy, support, career development, and well-being.

We’re always looking for volunteers that want to join us, so if you want to get involved with our Advocacy, Career Development, Social, or Public Relations committees (or just want to help out in general), just send us an email at bostonpostdoctoralassociation at gmail.com<mailto:bostonpostdoctoralassociation at gmail.com>.

- We launched a Slack channel to keep Boston-area postdocs connected. It’s been a great way for our postdocs to connect, so we hope you'll join! There are multiple channels for: postdoc parents, international postdocs, activism, seminars, check-ins, and updates. Also a good place for general information, discussion, support, socializing, venting, commiseration, or anything else you might need. Join our Slack hub here<https://join.slack.com/t/bostonpostdocs/shared_invite/zt-emc7455v-i6gfge7KPUx7GariUstGNA> or copy this link: https://join.slack.com/t/bostonpostdocs/shared_invite/zt-emc7455v-i6gfge7KPUx7GariUstGNA .

- We recently heard from the Academic Mutual Aid Foundation (AMAF), a mutual aid organization for academic trainees, and wanted to let you know of their mission and opportunities. The AMAF (https://academicmutualaid.org/) is a 501(c) nonprofit coordinating mutual aid, to help the academic trainee/employee community become more resilient to unexpected expenses. They collect donations and distribute them to academic folks in need, which is especially important during the COVID-19 crisis. If you’re finding yourself in a situation of acute financial need, please reach out to them for help at the link above, and if you’re able to donate, please feel free to support them.

- We’re once again partnering with NeuroBoston<https://www.neuroboston.org/>, the Boston chapter of the Society for Neuroscience, for their Fall Symposium in Neuroscience, which this year will be online on Nov. 5, 2020. You can register and submit a poster here<https://www.eventbrite.com/e/120520055731> (abstract deadline recently extended from the one on this site, but still ending soon).

- Finally, in the attachment we have some non-BPDA events and opportunities from the region that you may be interested in.

Thanks again for all of your support as we grow and improve as an organization. We’re confident that with the support of Boston postdocs, the newly incorporated BPDA will be even better positioned to support our community.

Ian Mahar
President, Boston Postdoctoral Association, Inc.
