Statement from Yiman

I joined MIT as a NSERC postdoctoral fellow in November 2018 in the Department of Biological Engineering. Prior to this postdoctoral fellowship, I was a research scientist in a pharmaceutical company. It was very difficult for me to make the decision of coming back to the academic as a postdoctoral fellow, not just because of the salary change, but mainly because of the fact that postdoctoral fellows are often not as well recognized as they should be– the fact that the enormous efforts and contributions made by postdoctoral fellows are often underestimated compared to the actual level of benefits and recognitions given to them. For example, at MIT, postdoctoral fellows are still not considered as alumni. I see the need to strive for more rights and benefits for the postdoctoral fellows and I’m willing to make my contributions by joining the PDA team as an advocacy chair. I will do my best to act as a bridge between the postdoctoral fellows and the school, by hearing the needs of the postdoctoral fellows and making sure they are effectively communicated with the people in charge. I have several experiences working with student groups during my PhD study, including volunteering at the international student office, and serving as the president in one of the Chinese student associations, where I had the opportunities to interact with students, organize events and work in the team. I’m confident that these experiences would help me fit into the role of advocacy chair in PDA smoothly
