Microcourse: Effective Problem solving for teams
Online
Businesses today face more problems than they have time to solve. As a result, people admit they tend jump too quickly to solutions. But how can someone competently evaluate a solution without first understanding the nature, source or root causes of the problem? It's a crucial mistake that often interferes with finding creative solutions that truly make an impact on organizations.
A new MicroCourse called Effective Problem Solving for Teams addresses this problem and explores how to grow your capacity for problem-solving—a critical building block of innovation. You'll learn how to see problems clearly, prioritize them, define them in actionable ways, and then engage in solving them.
The MicroCourse is taught by Dr. David Niño, Senior Lecturer for the Bernard M. Gordon-MIT Engineering Leadership Program, and offers key learnings from the popular Digital Plus Programs course, Leadership & Innovation for Technology Professionals<https://professional.mit.edu/programs/digital-plus-programs/course-offerings/leadership-innovation-technology-professionals>.

Weekly Wednesday Meeting - What did you bring in your suitcase?
October 24, 2018 3PM - 5:00PM
E55- Pent House
What did you bring in your suitcase when you moved to Boston? There are the physical items you brought, your clothes and books and maybe a few household goods. But maybe there are a few special items you brought too, something you were afraid they wouldn't have in the US, like a particular ingredient or cooking utensil. Perhaps a certain medicine or remedy that you rely on. Did you bring photos or recipes? In addition to those physical items, you also brought hopes and expectations and plans with you about your time in Boston.
On Wednesday, bring an object you brought in your suitcase so we can learn more about each other. If it's difficult to bring an item with you, at the beginning of the meeting you will also have an opportunity to create a drawing of what you brought in your suitcase. We will share our stories, but if you don't feel ready to talk in front of others, you can just come and listen. Children are welcome and snacks will be provided.

The MIT Cooking Group is open for all the MIT community. For those who love and have a passion for food and cooking. We meet at the Penthouse of Eastgate from 11am - 2pm. For each meeting you need to send an email to the coordinator so they can know how many people are coming to the meeting and the cookers can buy the ingredients accordingly. At the end we all share the recipes, pictures and the cost of the ingredients for the food. If no volunteers sign up for a particular date, we will cancel the meeting. We welcome any member of the MIT community that has an interest in food and that would like to have a good time. Samsung Tech Talk- Solutions for Unstructured Data Growth with Flash
Monday October 22nd
Star- D463
5:00-6:00PM Tech Talk Abstract:
In the age of machine-generated data where almost every device is generating information, unstructured data is growing at an exponential rate and outpacing our ability to analyze it. Flash-based architectures and solutions can provide much needed relief in processing this massive data. We will discuss current Software, Hardware and Systems areas of research related to managing and processing unstructured data. One example discussed will be Samsung’s Scalable Object Storage and related technologies in development on SSD.
Speaker: Ron Lee, Director of Software Engineering (MSL – Memory Software Lab)
Ron has been working in the Enterprise Storage Systems industry for the past 20+ years and started his career at MaxStrat where he delivered several generations of the world's fastest fault tolerant SAN and NAS Storage Server products based on Fibre Channel Technologies. After Sun Microsystems acquired MaxStrat in 1999, he led the Sun engineering team to deliver one of industry's first fully Fault Tolerant Fiber Channel Storage Arrays. Recently at Samsung, he has been researching in the areas of Big Data and Object Storage technologies using Flash. Ron is an expert on Scalable Enterprise Storage Systems Architecture including File Systems, Flash Arrays, High Availability, Networking and Storage Protocols.
