Offer Letters, Non-Competes and NDAs: What do they Really Mean?
October 15, 2018 3:30PM - 4:45PM
Building 2-142
This workshop will review and discuss the kinds of offer letters, noncompetition agreements, nondisclosure agreements, and invention assignment agreements that new employees are regularly asked to sign as they join companies. Using actual agreements, we will examine:
* The extent to which offer letters truly mean what they say, and whether and to what extent they are negotiable;
* Whether noncompetes are enforceable;
* The restrictions actually imposed by the typical NDA (non-disclosure agreement) and Invention Assignment Agreement,
* The special problems of planning to start your own company while still working.
The instructors were for many years practicing attorneys – the focus of this workshop is on realistic, practical concerns. No prior knowledge of the law is necessary.
Registration via requested via Careerbridge<https://candidate.gradleaders.com/MITGECD/Candidates/Login.aspx?pid=3624&workshopID=78311>.
R Data Wrangling
October 16, 2018 10:00 AM - 12:30PM
Building 14, 14N-132

It is intended for those already comfortable with using R for data analysis who wish to move on to writing their own functions. To the extent possible this workshop uses real-world examples. Concepts will be introduced as they are needed for a realistic analysis task. In the course of working through a realistic project we will lean about interacting with web services, regular expressions, iteration, functions, control flow and more.
Prerequisite: basic familiarity with R, such as acquired from an introductory R workshop.
Use a lab computer or bring your own laptop with R (https://www.r-project.org/) and RStudio (https://www.rstudio.com/products/rstudio/download/) installed.

Rising Nuclear Threats in a Disrupted World
October 17, 2018 12:00PM - 1:30PM
E40-496
SSP Wednesday Seminar
Lori Murray (Council on Foreign Relations)
Nuclear Threats are on the rise, as regional state actors proliferate, non-state actors continue to threaten the use of these weapons and great powers modernize with rapidly advancing technologies and destabilizing nuclear policies that could potentially undermine strategic stability. These challenges are among those contributing to the break-down and potential collapse of the global order that sought to control the growth and spread of these weapons. How dangerous are these threats? Is the global arms control and non-proliferation regimes about to collapse? What is the role of the United States in determining that future? These are among the central questions that will be addressed in this seminar.

What's So Funny About Oppressive Regimes?
October 18, 2018 6:00PM - 8:00PM
3-270
As a senior producer on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and Trevor Noah, Sara Taksler has spent her career taking comedic pot shots at politicians. When she met Dr. Bassem Youssef, an Egyptian satirist who uses comedy to criticize Middle Eastern politics, Taksler witnessed first-hand how laughter thrives, even in terrifying circumstances. Tickling Giants<http://www.ticklinggiants.com/>, Taksler’s documentary about Youssef, is a hilarious story about finding comedy in unexpected places. Taksler joins the MIT Communications Forum to discuss the power of free speech and what’s so funny about oppressive regimes. A screening of Tickling Giants will be held at MIT in Room 26–100 on Friday, October 19th at 7pm.

MIT S&PC Cooking Group
October 19, 2018 11:00AM - 2:00PM
W85-Basement
The MIT Cooking Group is open for all the MIT community. For those who love and have a passion for food and cooking. Our members have a varied level of cooking skills, but we all share a common interest in learning about new dishes, making friends, and exploring new cultures and techniques. We come together to share our culinary experiences and passion. This group is led by Katerina Vinichenko. Every Friday two members volunteer to prepare the main course and a dessert, while the rest help with the preparation of the dishes and with the cleaning afterwards, or by playing with the kids (we are a kids frendly group).
We meet at the Penthouse of Eastgate from 11am - 2pm. For each meeting you need to send an email to the coordinator so they can know how many people are coming to the meeting and the cookers can buy the ingredients accordingly. At the end we all share the recipes, pictures and the cost of the ingredients for the food. If no volunteers sign up for a particular date, we will cancel the meeting. We welcome any member of the MIT community that has an interest in food and that would like to have a good time. You can find us by email at: katerina.vinichenko at gmail.com or on Facebook: MIT Cooking Group.

Samsung Tech Talk- Solutions for Unstructured Data Growth with Flash
Monday October 22nd
Star- D463
5:00-6:00PM Tech Talk Abstract:
In the age of machine-generated data where almost every device is generating information, unstructured data is growing at an exponential rate and outpacing our ability to analyze it. Flash-based architectures and solutions can provide much needed relief in processing this massive data. We will discuss current Software, Hardware and Systems areas of research related to managing and processing unstructured data. One example discussed will be Samsung’s Scalable Object Storage and related technologies in development on SSD.
Speaker: Ron Lee, Director of Software Engineering (MSL – Memory Software Lab)
Ron has been working in the Enterprise Storage Systems industry for the past 20+ years and started his career at MaxStrat where he delivered several generations of the world's fastest fault tolerant SAN and NAS Storage Server products based on Fibre Channel Technologies. After Sun Microsystems acquired MaxStrat in 1999, he led the Sun engineering team to deliver one of industry's first fully Fault Tolerant Fiber Channel Storage Arrays. Recently at Samsung, he has been researching in the areas of Big Data and Object Storage technologies using Flash. Ron is an expert on Scalable Enterprise Storage Systems Architecture including File Systems, Flash Arrays, High Availability, Networking and Storage Protocols.

Science training rarely includes the skills needed to effectively manage an academic lab or nonacademic work group. Talented managers get more done in any work place, and not all science trainees have a good role model for this skill. Just like doing research—effective management is something you can learn and at which you can excel. This talk is designed to give you an introduction to the skills you can develop to be a good manager. Useful resources and tools provided for future training.
