Foundations of Deep Learning: An Introduction

October 2, 2018 2:00PM

Admirality Center

Please join MIT Professional Education for this inaugural workshop ofFoundations of Deep Learning: An Introduction, taking place at Admiralty Center, Hong Kong, China on October 10, 2018. This three-hour workshop will be conducted by MIT professor Vivienne Sze<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=As-mUL3LRyg&feature=youtu.be>, a renowned leader in building energy-efficient and high-performance systems and system design for deep learning.

Deep learning is widely used for many artificial intelligence (AI) applications including computer vision, speech recognition, robotics, etc. While deep learning delivers state-of-the-art accuracy on many AI tasks, it demands high computational complexity. Accordingly, designing efficient hardware systems to support deep learning is an important step towards enabling its wide deployment, particularly for embedded applications such as mobile, Internet of Things (IOT), and drones.

During the workshop, Professor Sze will provide an overview of recent advances towards enabling the efficient processing of deep learning. She will discuss various hardware platforms and architectures that support deep learning, and highlight key trends.

Immigrant Entrepreneurs from Main Street to the Fort Point

October 10, 2018 at 3:00pm to 4:00pm

Boston City Hall Plaza

Are we a stronger city and economy because of our historic openness to immigration or should we close the borders and restrict access?

What happens to the economy if we are more restrictive, or more open? What is the impact on jobs, employers and economic growth?

A panel, including Min He, Co-President of MIT Chief 2017, will address why our economy, from Main Street to Fort Point, depends heavily on immigrants, why the implications of restricting immigration are grim, and what more can be done to support immigrant entrepreneurs.

DSL Speaker Series: Donna Hicks
October 11, 2018 4 to 4 PM Walker Memorial

The Division of Student Life Speaker Series is proud to present Donna Hicks, Ph.D., who will lecture on her latest book:

"Leading with Dignity: How to Create a Culture that Brings Out the Best in People"

In her new book, Hicks explores the under recognized role of dignity in workplace culture. She argues that the extent to which leaders pay attention to, recognize, and understand the dignity concerns underlying people’s grievances makes an enormous difference as to whether leaders can resolve conflicts, have better relationships, and remedy toxic workplace cultures.

In this landmark book, Hicks extends the reach of her award winning book

Dignity: Its Essential Role in Resolving Conflict, and offers leaders a specific, practical guide to achieving a culture of dignity.

Currently an associate at Harvard’s Weatherhead Center for International Affairs, Hicks has worked extensively on international conflict resolution in the Middle East, Sri Lanka, Columbia, Cuba, and Northern Ireland (with Archbishop Desmond Tutu). In her current work, she and has found that although dignity is our highest common denominator and plays a critical role in the well-being and health of a workplace culture, most of us – including leaders – know very little about it. Often confused with the concept of “respect,” dignity goes much deeper, and reflects our inherent value and worth. Everyone wants to be treated in a way that shows they matter. Without a working knowledge of dignity, leaders unknowingly fail to honor it in others and unintentionally cause emotional pain, conflict, and distrust – which can ultimately create a toxic work environment.

Science training rarely includes the skills needed to effectively manage an academic lab or nonacademic work group. Talented managers get more done in any work place, and not all science trainees have a good role model for this skill. Just like doing research—effective management is something you can learn and at which you can excel. This talk is designed to give you an introduction to the skills you can develop to be a good manager. Useful resources and tools provided for future training.
