This section puts a spotlight on anyone who has made great contributions to the MIT postdoc community and MIT-PDA.

[cid:image009.png at 01D3B237.65AA95A0]Mica Smith, ChemE Postdoctoral Associate in Green Group
Tell us a little bit about yourself and your research.
Mica: I obtained my PhD in chemistry at UC Berkeley in 2016, and started my postdoctoral position September 2017 in the group of Professor William Green in the chemical engineering department. My research involves using laser absorption spectroscopy and photoionization mass spectrometry to measure reaction rates and product branching ratios critical to the development of chemical mechanisms in combustion processes.
When and why did you join the MIT PDA?
Mica: I got involved in the PDA soon after I came to MIT. I really appreciate that postdocs at MIT work to support each other and make sure that resources are available at each stage of a postdoc's career. I was excited to contribute to that important work and to get to know others in the postdoc community.
Which committee are you involved with in the PDA?
Mica: I am a member of the PDA fundraising committee, which is in charge of organizing the annual MIT PDA vendor fair among other activities. I have been working to get representatives from various companies to attend and coordinate all the details in advance of the fair. I invite everyone to come to the vendor fair and Scientific PowerPoint Karaoke Competition in the Stata Center on March 13!
What do you find the most challenging in your work with the PDA?
Mica: The most challenging part of my work with the PDA has been the interactions with outside companies. It has been a great opportunity to engage with people working in spheres other than academia, and learning to come out of my shell and talk with different kinds of people has been tough at times but also very rewarding.

Participate in the PowerPoint Karaoke for MIT Postdocs!
As part of the MIT PDA Vendor fair 2018 we host a PowerPoint Karaoke.
We are looking for MIT Postdocs who are passionate about research and can present unknown scientific achievements in an appealing and funny way!
What do you have to do? Actually not much. You (and all other participants) have to provide a short (about 10 min) presentation about your research - which you might have used at a conference or a seminar. The slide decks will be shuffled among all participants on the day of the PowerPoint Karaoke and you have to present an unknown presentation in the funniest way you can think of.

Contact: Sounds interesting? Please contact Andreas Steinbacher (asteinbacher at mit.edu<mailto:asteinbacher at mit.edu>) if you want to participate or if you need more information.
