Thus, I hope to be elected as Vice President.

Running for: Corresponding Secretary

Anish Paul Antony,

Postdoctoral Associate, D-Lab,

anishp at MIT.EDU<mailto:anishp at MIT.EDU>

I am Anish Paul Antony, postdoc at MIT D-Lab. I currently serve in the postdoc association (PDA) as the Co-chair of the MIT Human Affairs Committee. In this role I help organize networking events through coffee conversations between MIT postdocs and the Industry. In order to further serve the MIT postdoc community, I am standing for the post of Corresponding Secretary. My goal for the coming year in this post will be to carry on the MIT PDA's correspondence within MIT and the external community through advertising of weekly events on and off campus, and by having an open line of communication through email with other postdocs on campus. While in graduate school, I performed a similar role as the Vice President of the Electrical Engineering Graduate Student Association (EEGSA) where I acted as a liaison between students, faculty and administrators resulting in increased networking and social programs for the students. I hope to use this experience to better serve both the MIT PDA and the larger MIT postdoc community in the coming year.

I believe that I can use these experiences and skills to understand a wide variety of demands from members of PDA. I have participated in almost all of the events hosted by PDA since I started to work at MIT. Therefore, I know many members of PDA including the current executive committee members. If I am elected as a Recording Secretary, I would like to support the president and vice president so that every decision making of executive boards becomes successful. Also, I want to make sure all the PDA meeting enjoyable and fruitful by taking care of details. For these reasons, I will nominate myself for the Recording Secretary position.

Running for Treasurer,

Yu-Ja Huang,

Postdoctoral Associate, Biological Engineering,

yuja at MIT.EDU<mailto:yuja at MIT.EDU>

I am currently a Postdoc in the Department of biological engineering. I am interested in running for the Treasurer position at the MIT PDA to gain the opportunity to interact closely with every functional unit inside the organization and help allocate resources efficiently to better serve the postdoc community. For the past 1.5 years since I stated my postdoc at MIT, I have enjoyed the variety of social and professional events offered by the MIT PDA and want to make sure those opportunities continue to be available to the broader postdoc community. The Treasurer position is exciting to me not only because it is a critical role that helps ensure that the PDAs resources are deployed most efficiently, but it will also allows me to make personal connections with talented postdocs within the MIT community. I look forward to serve and meet every one of you in the future.

Running for Professional Development Committee,

Postdoctoral Associate,

qbukhari at MIT.EDU<mailto:qbukhari at MIT.EDU>

I am a computational neuroscientist at McGovern Institute for Biomedical Research at MIT with a background in Electrical Engineering, Computer Vision and Artificial Intelligence. In my research work I use artificial intelligence tools to help further our understanding of the human brain. My unique contribution to research is the integration of sophisticated engineering tools to ask translational and basic neuroscience questions by combining my expertise in neuroscience and engineering. At MIT, the goal of my research is to develop personalized treatment/medicine for psychiatric patients using neuroimaging data. I use different neuroimaging techniques (fMRI, MEG, EEG, and DTI) to better predict the treatment response outcome for psychiatric disorders from many alternate treatment options by using machine learning algorithms. I aim to develop a system that can predict the optimal treatment option from alternate therapies for psychiatric disorder patients. I also use these tools to investigate the relationship between cognitive skills and brain measures.

Agenda

As a PDA board member, I would like to use my skills to contribute to the professional development of the postdocs at MIT. I aim to organize events that may build good collaborations between the industries and MIT postdocs to help them later in their job search.

Running for Advocacy Chair,

Mohamed T. Ghoneim,

Postdoctoral Associate, MIT Media Lab.

mghoneim at MIT.EDU<mailto:mghoneim at MIT.EDU>

I have been an international postdoc at MIT since Feb. 2017, and I am interested in serving at the MIT PDA as Advocacy Committee Chair (https://www.linkedin.com/in/mohamed-t-ghoneim-phd-58a72523/).

Like many of you, I wear many hats including international scholar, lab researcher, and family man. This has given me a very good perspective on the issues postdocs commonly face during their training at MIT. As postdocs, we contribute significantly to the research output of MIT while forgoing salaries paid for equivalent positions in industry. In addition, we face the pressure of maintaining an adequate living standard. We, therefore, must advocate for a fairer compensation system that takes into consideration our contribution to the MIT community. We also need to advocate for more professional development opportunities during our training and more institutional support for transitioning into positions that are optimal for our training.

For leaving international postdocs, training visa and sponsorship issues are continuing problems. Uprooting our families from their familiar lives in the Greater Boston area is a ritual many international postdocs go through because of visa issues. We need to make sure postdocs are given resources and are made aware of not just visa regulations but also given information about opportunities and options to change their visa status to one that supports long-term employment opportunities in the US.

Another developmental aspect that would help in advocacy is preparing the postdoctoral community for post-training transition. Learning about transferable skills in high demand early on could smoothen a postdoc's transition. Postdocs who understand the dynamics that await them at the end of their training are more likely to prepare for it in advance and effectively advocate for their own success.

Finally, we also need a formalized institutional mechanism for conflict management for postdoctoral trainees and mentors. Although entities such as the ombuds office deal with general conflicts; there is no institute-wide mechanism specifically for postdocs that I am aware of that can mediate in these situations.

I believe the advocacy committee, through interactions with fellow postdocs/faculty/MIT administration, can bring about a much needed positive change in the lives of the postdoctoral scholars at MIT. I can assure you that I will be a passionate advocate to maximize our postdoctoral experience at MIT.

Running for Community Building Committee Chair,

Satish Kumar Iyemperumal,

Postdoctoral Associate,

satishki at MIT.EDU<mailto:satishki at MIT.EDU>

I cofounded and served as the secretary of chemical engineering graduate organization (CEGO) at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI). As a newly formed organization, I actively participated in various roles in CEGO at WPI. I co-organized several cool and fascinating science exhibits open to the public every summer that attracts all ages of people from elementary school kids to those who have grand-kids. I was also involved in holding other activities for girl scouts with hands on science workshops and organizing networking events for graduate students with professionals from industry and academia. I enjoyed working with people and organizing events that benefit the target community. I would like to continue this interest of mine by running for the community building committee chair for the postdoctoral association at MIT.

I would first actively communicate with the current chair to get familiar with the logistics and any other necessary details related to this position. I propose to start off this role (if elected) by sending out a small survey to postdocs to get some data on the kind of events they are more likely to attend based on their past participation and current interests. Besides the current activities such as Music-and-munchies and Barbeque, some of the other potential events can be (i) Beer Fridays - there is no need for explanation I presume. (ii) Holiday-themed events - this can include costume contest on Halloween, and other activities on Thanksgiving, Valentine's day, etc. (iii) Monthly Karaoke night. I would like to note that these events will be tailored as per the interests of the postdocs at MIT. Actively involving the postdocs in various events and getting their suggestions can greatly facilitate connections between fellow postdocs.

Bio:

I joined the chemical engineering department at MIT as a postdoctoral associate in July, 2018. I graduated with a PhD in chemical engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute, where I worked on improving the catalytic conversion of carbon dioxide to useful fuels using quantum mechanical simulations. At MIT, my research involves molecular dynamics simulations of the water transport of one-dimensional nanomaterials like carbon nanotubes and solvent assisted exfoliation of two-dimensional materials like molybdenum disulfide. Outside research, I enjoy hitting the gym, playing squash, and hanging out with friends.

I am a Postdoc from Angelika Amon's lab at the Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research. Since coming to MIT a year ago (July, 2017), I have enjoyed the Friday night volleyball games hosted by the PDA. I found it to be a great way to get out of the lab and meet other postdocs, and it helped me to get settled in at MIT. So I hope to serve the community in return as the Sports Committee Chair to continue this tradition and to help organize and facilitate sports-related activities for postdocs.

Do you want to meet other postdocs? Are you seeking career advice... or simply looking for free food?

There are lots of resources and events for MIT postdocs, but many of us are unaware of them. Being benefited from PDA's social events, I am motivated to help you to make the most of your training at MIT through enhancing the information flow in the postdoc community. I see the IT/Information Flow Committee Chair as an important role in ensuring good communication among more than 1550 postdocs at MIT, bringing us together and making information sharing more efficient.

Why me...

I have organized international conferences and have been involved in building and optimizing conference websites. These experiences will help me to serve MIT's postdoc community, specifically as the IT/Information Flow Committee Chair. More importantly, I think life is more than doing research. We should make good use of MIT's resources for our personal growth during our stay at MIT. Let me keep you informed, help you to enrich your MIT experience... or at least make it worth mentioning!

Please vote for me!
