We just concluded a Consulting Interview Bootcamp conducted by Mangementconsulted.com to facilitate interview preparation for the hiring season for top consulting firms.

We also had the Dr. Sadik Kassim, Chief Scientific Officer of Mustang Bio, a leading cancer immunotherapy company as our guest in the Coffee and Conversation series, where shared his journey from being a bench scientist to successful biopharma executive. General Elections for 2018-2019 MIT-PDA officers

The MIT PDA is calling on all MIT Postdoctoral Associate and Fellows to consider serving the postdoc community and nominate yourselves for the term 2018-2019 term beginning in September.  Please fill this form<https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSe4t-lphUiGDRR4-JPbVWY_IKYgWw7Bg0267y8ljFiSz2SWHQ/viewform> to send your nominations. Please only nominate yourself for only ONE position.

  *   All MIT Postdoctoral Associate and Fellows are eligible to nominate themselves for standing committee positions.
  *   All MIT Postdoctoral Associate and Fellows who meet the specific requirements listed below are eligible to run for executive board positions.
  *   All MIT Postdoctoral Associate and Fellows are eligible to vote for the candidates of their choice via secret ballot.
  *   Candidate must nominate themselves by July 20th, 2018 to qualify to be in the ballot on August 1st, 2018.<https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSe4t-lphUiGDRR4-JPbVWY_IKYgWw7Bg0267y8ljFiSz2SWHQ/viewform>
  *   Each candidate can only nominate themselves for only one position.

  *   Election procedures will be enforced by and are at the discretion of the Election Committee and the Election Committee Chair.
  *   All MIT postdocs will be informed of candidates and their details in due course to make informed choices.

MIT PDA Officer Position Details (and specific eligibility requirements)

Executive Board Members

President
The President of the PDA is responsible for representing the Postdocs of MIT at both an institution and national level. The President is in charge of chairing PDA meetings and general supervision of PDA affairs including managing the Committees.  The President must ensure that the association is working to fulfill the mission of providing support to the postdocs at MIT.

(To be eligible for the position of President, a MIT PDA Member must have previously served as an MIT PDA Officer for a minimum of 60 days or have attended a minimum of one third of all PDA monthly Meetings within a 12 monthE  period immediately preceding the election)

Vice President
The Vice President assists and works closely with the President of the PDA. The VP is in charge of chairing meetings and assuming other responsibilities of the President when the president is absent (which is not uncommon given the short appointments and busy schedules of Postdocs). The VP can also assist with the management of Committees, interactions with Institute representatives, and the carrying out of PDA aims.

Treasurer
The Treasurer's primary duty is to maintain accurate accounting of the PDA's various committees and funds in order to help establish a budget for each committee and to keep the PDA financially viable.

Corresponding Secretary
The Corresponding Secretary is in charge of the PDA's correspondence, which involves answering and forwarding all emails and keeping the postdoc community informed about events through the weekly newsletter.

Recording Secretary
The Recording Secretary is a member of the PDA board of directors who actively participate in PDA decision making. Primary responsibilities of the recording secretary include keeping the detailed minutes of PDA meetings and maintaining all the PDA records in a timely and orderly fashion.

(Eligibility: Current Executive board members who have remained in executive board positions for two consecutive terms are ineligible to run for executive board positions. However, they may run for committee chair positions below)

Standing Committee Chairs

(All MIT postdoctoral Associates and Fellows are eligible to nominate themselves for the following positions)

Advocacy Committee Chair
The advocacy committee advocates for the rights and benefits of all postdocs at MIT. The chair listens and respond to postdocs on advocacy issues that are important to them. The chair communicates with the key MIT administration nodes of MIT including, the office of the vice president for research (VPR), central HR, departmental HR, MIT work-life center, International scholars office (ISCHo), Benefits office, Payroll office, and relevant Faculty.

Professional Development Committee Chair
The role of the Professional Development Committee is to help all postdocs in shaping their careers by organizing career-building workshops, research symposiums, industry ventures, etc. The industry academic mentoring program is our signature initiative.

Community Building Committee Chair
The objective of the Community Building Committee is to ensure active participation and involvement of all the postdocs with rest of the MIT community and beyond. We organize several events throughout the calendar year to facilitate an environment where postdocs can come out of their regular work schedules and get to know their fellow postdocs.

IT/Information Flow Committee Chair
The IT Committee sets up efficient communication and publicity systems (i.e. Email Listserv, LinkedIn, Twitter, and Facebook groups, etc.), maintains and up-to-date internet site of resources and information, and establish consistency and continuity in the mission, organization, and conduct of the PDA.

Alumni Committee Chair
The Alumni Committee contributes to the effort to streamline MIT Alumni Association's Infinite Connection (IC) sign up, and then to promote it widely to postdocs. Its purpose is to build the whole area of postdoc alumni, create communications and events in these areas, and maximize the IC resource for postdocs.

Fundraising Committee Chair
The Fundraising Committee works with businesses and organizations to generate additional funds to support PDA activities. A key revenue-generating event is a vendor fair held in the early spring.

Human Affairs Committee Chair
The Human Affairs Committee promotes inclusion, respect, and fair treatment of all postdocs within the MIT community. This is achieved by  planning events, such as the monthly coffee hour. The HA Chair participates in and promotes health and wellness programs, advertises these resources to postdocs, and works with the administration to improve current programs. The HA chair also represents the postdoctoral community as a member of the MIT Committee on Race and Diversity.

Orientation Committee Chair
The Orientation Committee is in charge of coordinating the PDA Orientation for new Postdocs. Additional duties include collecting survey results to better understand the concerns of incoming postdocs and providing feedback to the PDA and HR about any such concerns.

The Postdoc Initiative Grants (PInG) Committee Chair
The Postdoc Initiatives Grant (PInG) Committee oversees the solicitation and selection of awards to seed the funding of new initiatives to benefit the postdoc community. The PInG Committee Chair is also responsible for being the point person for all ongoing and new PInG initiatives.  Previous initiatives include: Postdoc Organization for Women Engaged in Research (POWER), Postdoc Yoga, Posdoc Venture Group, Glimpse: the postdoc podcast, Postdoc Zumba, and Postdoc Running Group.

Sports Committee Chair
The Sports Committee of the PDA is building a vibrant, welcoming community for MIT postdocs through sports and social events. regardless of their skill level, followed by socials that usually involve free food.

Postdoc Orientation Sessions

The PDA offers Postdoc Orientation Sessions open to all postdocs at MIT.

Join us for indoor volleyball and soccer! Never played before? Don't worry! All abilities are welcome. Spouses and significant others of postdocs are welcome free of charge! Friends and colleagues may join only if they have an athletics membership (otherwise you may need to pay a 1time entrance fee that is around $15).

Beginner? Show up early to learn how to play and improve skills. The courts are located in the Zesiger center. Enter through the Vassar street entrance and the attendees at the gate should let you through if you say you are with the PDA and present MIT ID. There are bathrooms in the facility where you can change or come with someone with a membership who can give you access to the locker rooms.
