Celebrating Cultures at MIT
Hosted by the MIT-PDA Community Building Committee, the Building 46 Postdoctoral Association, and the MIT International Scholars Office.
Join in a potluck dinner to celebrate the diverse cultures in our MIT postdoctoral and international community! This event is open to all MIT postdocs, internationals students and scholars, and their families. For a potluck in the US, participants traditionally prepare homemade dishes. For our event, you can bring a homemade creation or a store-bought dish. Share a delicious dish from home or from a culture you want to celebrate with everyone! Dishes can be an appetizer, snack, main dish, side dish, soup, dessert, or beverage. They can be meat-based, vegetarian, or vegan. Each dish should have enough portions to share for 5-6 people.
The MIT-PDA will provide serving utensils, plates, bowls, cups, and napkins. Also rice, bread, and some dessert items to help get the meals started. We will also have some non-alcoholic drinks, beer, and wine. Be sure to bring your MIT ID and government-issued ID if you want a non-alcoholic beverage.
Please RSVP your attendance, the number of guests you will likely bring, and indicate the dish(es) you can contribute to the potluck. We would also like to play music from different cultures at the event and would love it if you could include a YouTube link for a festive song from your culture of choice!

Bloomberg Tech Talk
Predicting Impact of Breaking News on Finance through Machine Learning
Abstract:
In this talk, we will discuss how ML impacts financial markets, in particular the impact of NLP to trading strategy development. The talk will focus on one of many ML/AI projects at Bloomberg: predicting impact of breaking news. This challenging task combines financial time series analysis and natural language processing, and requires a unique form of supervision. We will discuss methods from deep learning, image processing, and time series analysis in context of this large scale sparse machine learning problem. We will also discuss practical issues in applying machine learning in strategy development and delivering machine learning solutions to other problems of finance.
The talk will end with a Q&A session.
Presenter: Gary Kazantsev, Head of Machine Learning Engineering, Bloomberg
Gary Kazantsev is the Head of Machine Learning Engineering at Bloomberg. Before joining Bloomberg in 2007, Gary earned Bachelor of Science degrees in physics, mathematics, and computer science at Boston University where he graduating with honors. He is also a member of the KDD Data Science + Journalism Workshop Program committee, a co-organizer of the annual Machine Learning in Finance conference at Columbia University and is a lecturer at Cornell Tech.
