*Lunch & Learn: Exploring a Career in Industry - Event with Raytheon’s
Principal Engineering Fellow Jay Lala*

*Title: Dependable Systems: Fault-Tolerance and Cyber ResilienceSpeaker:
Jay Lala, SM '73, SD '76, Principal Engineering Fellow, Raytheon Company*

*Date and Time: Tuesday, January 17th, 11:30am - 1:30pm. **Lunch will be
provided.*
*Location: Patil/Kiva Seminar Room (Room 32-G449) at CSAIL*

Dr. Lala is responsible for leading the cyber resilience testing of
Raytheon’s products, including weapon systems. As the Tech Director for the
Cyber Operations, Development and Evaluation (CODE) Center, he sets the
company guidelines and standards for cyber testing and evaluation. Dr. Lala
is also an internationally-recognized expert in real-time and
mission-critical systems. His focus is on research & development, system
architecture and design, with special emphasis on mission assurance
properties such as fault-tolerance and cyber-resilience.

Prior to Raytheon, Dr. Lala’s experience spanned non -profit R&D (Draper
Laboratory), academia (MIT), and US Govt Science & Technology (DARPA)
institutions. At Draper Laboratory, his technical accomplishments included
a number of fault-tolerant system architectures for real-time, mission- and
safety-critical applications for NASA and the DoD. Noteworthy examples
include a swim-by-wire control system for the US Navy’s Seawolf-class
nuclear attack submarines, and a fault-tolerant parallel processor for
NASA’s X-38 Crew Return Vehicle which now also controls the Orbital
Sciences’ Cygnus spacecraft. While at Draper Lab, he was also a thesis
advisor for a number of MIT graduate (SM and PhD) students.

Dr. Lala has five patents in fault-tolerant computing. He has widely
published in peer-reviewed scientific journals, edited books, contributed
chapters to books, and has been invited to author papers and make
presentations at international conferences, with over 60 publications to
his credit.

*What is the CSAIL Alliances Lunch & Learn?*
The CSAIL Lunch & Learn is for all MIT grad students and post-docs
considering a career in industry. Each speaker presents an industry
perspective of a research area and shares their personal journey from
academia to industry. Registration is limited to 25 attendees.
