Learn How to Self-Promote Without Sounding Like a Jerk: MITAA April
Career Lunch & Learn

Hosted by MIT Alumni Association (MIAA)

Would you rather visit the dentist than brag about your own skills and
achievements? Then this webinar is for people like you. Unfortunately,
you can’t just go about your business and hope someone notices you. Like
it or not, it’s important to make it easy for others to understand what
you aspire to accomplish and what you have to offer. That takes
self-promotion, and this webinar explains how to do it in a respectful,
honest, and effective manner.
In<http://alumic.mit.edu/s/1314/03-alumni/wide.aspx?sid=1314&gid=13&pgid=37186&content_id=40369>this
webinar, you will learn: Why helping others is the most effective and
easiest form of “self-promotion”, why you should use social media, even
if you hate using social media, when and why it makes sense to
communicate as though you were talking to a seven-year-old, and the
misunderstood power of context, and why the lack of it slows so many
careers. All who attend this webinar will also receive a free digital
copy of Bruce Kasanoff’s book—author and presenter—of the same name, How
to Self-Promote without Being a Jerk. Both the book and the webinar are
a quick way to understand the power of saying what you want in an
engaging and understandable manner.

Branding Yourself - Effective Communication Skills

Communication goes beyond verbal skills which are important to the
success of any job seeker. To Brand yourself as a professional, you must
deliver a consistent message in a Written, Verbal, and Virtual manner.
As students and postdocs begin to look for positions in engineering and
science, both in academia and industry, they must be aware of how their
nonverbal communication skills impact their possibility of finding
employment opportunities. Learning how to maximize the use of one's
verbal and nonverbal communication skills is a powerful tool to help one
