We'll be hosting a quiz bowl at the excellent Aeronaut Brewing this Friday night to mark the end of Post Doc Appreciation Week!
We'll be serving pizza to go with the amazing beer you can purchase from Aeronaut's cash bar. Form your team and compete for personal pride and prizes! Postdoc Orientation Sessions:

The PDA offers Postdoc Orientation Sessions open to all postdocs at MIT. Topics covered include:
*       Data on postdoc population at MIT

  *   MIT oversight of postdocs
  *   Defining postdoc expectations
  *   Differences between fellows and associates
  *   PDA structure and initiatives
*       How to get involved
The sessions will be typically the 1st and 3rd Monday of each month at 12pm (45-60min) in E19-306. Lunch will be provided.

We are conducting yoga class series regularly and the next one is starting on September 14, and will be taking place on Wednesdays, 7:30 pm in room 1-090. A rate for postdocs and their spouses/partners is offered for a 10 class session for $80. This is a gentle all-level relaxing yoga class and no prior experience is required.
The classes will take place on the following 10 dates:
September, 14, 21, 28; October 5, (no class Oct.12), 19, 26; November 2, 9, 16, (No class Nov. 23, day prior to Thanksgiving), 30.

Identifying Career Paths for PhDs in Science (hosted by Boston University)
PDPA and BU's BEST Program will host Melanie Sinche (Jackson Laboratory for Genomic Research) to describe her research focused on identifying key 'skills gaps' for PhDs. Melanie's work surveyed PhDs in their first job in order to map the skills they received during training to the skills they actually use day-to-day. Based on this data, she has developed strategies for graduate students and postdocs to explore career paths and/or professional development opportunities to find the occupation(s) and develop the skills that are right for them. A short career panel focused on non-tenure track careers in academia will follow Melanie's talk and lead into a networking reception.
