MICRO RITMIA CONCERT
Hosted by the MIT-PDA
The band MICRO RITMIA from Mexico is in town and we could convince them to
play an exclusive show at MIT. Ernesto and his band will perform their
music in the Gillian Auditorium (66-110) and will mesmerize you with their
high speed percussions, their multi rhythmic guitar and bass lines, and
their custom made instruments. This will push the borders of modern music
to a new border of speed and complexity.
Date and Time Tuesday, November 15, 5pm
Location 66-110 (Gilliland Auditorium)
Micro-Ritmia is Ernesto Martinez’s compositional project, which he
developed over the past twenty years and is based on sync networks to
pre-assist composition and live performance. His system accelerates live
composition and improvisation into the fields of hypervelocity; collective
virtuosity goes where no individual skills can go. Through guitars, basses,
marimbas, percussion, voice and tailor-made instruments, Micro-Ritmia
allows musicians to reach performance speeds previously impossible for
humans and usually only attainable by computers. This music is based on a
mathematical accuracy in the millisecond range; for the audience, it
produces an “instant error” perception, making them oscillate continuously
between credibility and disbelief. Wrapped in a deeply stimulating
experience, the audience interprets what is happening either as an error or
as an act of control. From the compositional perspective, error works as a
highly powerful generator that enriches instant composition. In a real-time
decision-making process, the eye of the director-composer curates live
music towards evocative and intense textures. The latest implementation of
Micro-ritmia’s system consists on fracturing the ensemble in two parts that
collapse or integrate each other, moving from simplicity to complexity,
from chaos to rhythmic harmony.
