Dear MIT Postdocs,

This week, the band MICRO RITMIA from Mexico is in town, and the PDA has
arranged an exclusive show for the MIT on Tuesday night! Check out the
attached poster for details. Also this Wednesday, the Office of the Vice
President for Research is hosting a seminar on “The Basics of Grant
Writing”, which is definitely worth attending.

And don’t forget, tomorrow (Monday, 11/14) is our monthly PDA meeting!

MICRO RITMIA

Hosted by the MIT-PDA

The band MICRO RITMIA from Mexico is in town and we could convince them to
play an exclusive show at MIT. Ernesto and his band will perform their
music in the Gillian Auditorium (66-110) and will mesmerize you with their
high speed percussions, their multi rhythmic guitar and bass lines, and
their custom made instruments. This will  push the borders of modern music
to a new border of speed and complexity.

BPDA Networking Pub Night of 2016

Hosted by the BPDA in collaboration with the MIT-PDA

Postdocs, join us for a fun night of drinks and informal networking!  We'll
have representatives from 20 local companies, and counting, that
traditionally hire PhD's (some who are actively hiring!) and who can speak
about their experiences on the job market and in their current jobs.

Postdoc Volleyball

Hosted by the MIT-PDA

Please join the PDA this Friday for post-doc volleyball!! The court is
located on the first floor of the Zesiger center. Enter through the Vassar
street entrance and the attendees at the gate should let you through if you
say you are with the PDA and present MIT ID. There are bathrooms in the
facility where you can change or come with someone with a membership who
can give you access to the locker rooms. Spouses and significant others of
postdocs are welcome free of charge. Friends and colleagues may join only
if they have an athletics membership (otherwise you may need to pay a 1
time entrance fee that is around $15). Anyone can join for the Muddy
afterwards (you just need to be with someone who has MIT ID) providing you
are 21 or over. Note the Muddy is cash only if you want to buy drinks.

Date and Time Friday, November 18, at 7:30 PM, followed by pizza at the
Muddy at 9:30 PM.

Postdoc Orientation Sessions

The PDA offers Postdoc Orientation Sessions open to all postdocs at MIT.
Topics covered include:

   PDA structure and initiatives

      How to get involved

The sessions will be typically the 1st and 3rd Monday of each month at 12pm
(45-60min) in E49-5145. Lunch will be provided. The dates for the next six
months are as follows: November 21, December 5, December 19. If you are

Discussion of the 2016 Presidential Election with Professor Charles Stewart

Hosted by Residential Scholars @ Simmons Hall, William R. ('56) and Betsey
P. Leitch

No matter who you supported or how you voted, the 2016 election likely
contained elements of surprise, emotion, and idealism. On Tuesday, November
15, join us for a discussion of the campaign, results, and implications of
this year's historic election. Dr. Charles Stewart, Professor of American
Politics at MIT, will present his analysis of key aspects of the election.
We're looking forward to an opportunity to engage diverse perspectives in a
discussion of what to expect next. Charles Stewart III is the Kenan Sahin
Distinguished Professor of Political Science at MIT, where he has taught
since 1985, and a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. His
research and teaching areas include congressional politics, elections, and
American political development. His current research about Congress touches
on the historical development of committees, origins of partisan
polarization, and Senate elections. He is currently the MIT director of the
Caltech/MIT Voting Technology Project (http://vote.caltech.edu/).

Basics of Grant Writing

Hosted by the Office of the Vice President for Research

Speaker: Dr. Sonal Jhaveri, Science Program Director, Postdoc and Graduate
Student Affairs Office, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Dr. Jhaveri's talk on
"Basics of Grant Writing" will focus on NIH applications, but the basic
principles she emphasizes are applicable to all types of grant writing. Dr.
Jhaveri is an MIT alumna (BS, MS). She received her PhD from Harvard
University, has been Principal Investigator on a number of grants from NIH,
NSF and other private foundations, has co-authored 60 professional
articles, and has consulted on a number of science and medical writing
projects. She teaches Science Communication and Language Skills to graduate
and medical students as well as to postdocs at MIT and Dana-Farber Cancer
Institute.

Ski Trip

Hosted by the MIT-GSC

The Ski Trip is open to all MIT graduate students and post-docs. The trip
includes 3 days of skiing, boarding and frolicking. Smugglers’ Notch
consists of three mountains (Morse, Sterling, and Madonna), and ranks among
the finest ski resorts in New England with plenty of trails for all levels
of skiing and boarding. A system of 8 lifts will take skiers and boarders
from The Village and lodging area to 78 trails along the three mountains.
With forecasts of a snowy winter, we're super excited to bring MIT up to
Smugglers’ Notch this year. So, save the date! All the details are on the
