Dear MIT Postdocs,

Welcome to spring!! After the record temperatures last week, in my opinion, winter is definitely over. Time to spend lunch breaks outside to get your head out of work and in the sun :)
And come and join us for St. Patrick's Day Bowling and Pub Crawl on Thursday! We may even find green beer in one of the pubs.

Best,
Kathrin

>From the PDA Committees:

>From the Advocacy Committee - Overtime Pay in Massachusetts
We want to let you all know about this petition, which is related to the new overtime pay proposed rule that many of us supported in September last year (which would most likely cause a raise in starting salary for postdocs to $50K).
This summer, the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) is expected to implement a new overtime rule, which would raise the overtime salary threshold from $23,660 to $50,440-strengthening the right of 13.5 million additional workers to receive overtime pay and the right to earn a fair living. As universities are unlikely to pay postdocs overtime, this would raise the effective postdoc minimum to $50,440.
However, some members of Congress are eager to prevent this deal by running out the clock on President Obama. The Congressional Review Act dictates that all "major" rules are delayed for 60 legislative days after they are submitted to Congress and are subject to a "fast track" process for repeal. That process has to end before President Obama leaves office to guarantee a veto of any Congressional resolution of disapproval.

If the Labor Department does not act soon, Congress will reverse this critical protection for millions of workers.
Please consider signing the petition, and then click on the confirmation email, so that we receive an official response from the White House.<http://kos.salsalabs.com/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=BWaBH5y6piKqEE8g5dKdecoUUrMUWVvX>

Other Events at MIT:

This Week:

Brown Bag: Searching in Harsh Environments - with Ophir Frieder (organized by MIT Libraries Information Science) New
Bring your lunch and join us for this fascinating presentation with Ophir Frieder<http://people.cs.georgetown.edu/%7Eophir/>, the Robert L. McDevitt, K.S.G., K.C.H.S. and Catherine H. McDevitt L.C.H.S. Chair in Computer Science and Information Processing at Georgetown University. This brown bag is appropriate for intermediate and advanced researchers and anyone interested in Big Data.
Many consider "searching" a solved problem, and for digital text processing, this belief is factually based. The problem is that many "real-world" search applications involve complex documents - comprising a mixture of images, text, signatures, tables, etc., and often available only in scanned hardcopy formats - and such applications are far from solved. Some of these documents are corrupted, some contain multiple languages, and accurate search systems for such document collections are currently unavailable.
This session will cover:

  * Efforts at building a complex document information-processing prototype and previous complex document benchmark development efforts
  * Spelling correction in adverse environments, including foreign name search and medical term search
  * Analyzing social media, an additional, non-traditional search environment
Date and Time: Tuesday, March 15th, 12:00-1:00pm
Location: E25-401
