>From the PDA Committees:
Call for Postdoc Initiative Grant (PInG) Proposals!
Do you have an idea for an activity or event that you think would benefit the postdoc community?
The MIT Postdoctoral Association is pleased to announce the second annual call for Postdoc Initiative Grant proposals. The grant aims to financially support a range of activities, events, and projects, including but not limited to:
* Social gatherings
* Recreational activities
* Arts and cultural programs
* Mental health and stress support groups
* Professional development seminars and workshops
Previously funded PInG projects include: Glimpse: the Postdoc Podcast, Yoga Classes, Postdoc Playdates, and POWER: Postdoctoral Women Engaged in Research.
So, think about what you'd like to do and send us a proposal! For more information and for the application form check out http://pda.mit.edu/ping. The deadline for applications is March 7, 2016 12:00 PM EST for events taking place from April to September.
We look forward to hearing your plans! Please contact the PInG Committee Chair, Elizabeth Stewart (ejstewar at mit.edu<mailto:ejstewar at mit.edu>), if you have any questions.
>From the Advocacy Committee - Overtime Pay in Massachusetts
We want to let you all know about this petition, which is related to the new overtime pay proposed rule that many of us supported in September last year (which would most likely cause a raise in starting salary for postdocs to $50K).
This summer, the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) is expected to implement a new overtime rule, which would raise the overtime salary threshold from $23,660 to $50,440-strengthening the right of 13.5 million additional workers to receive overtime pay and the right to earn a fair living. As universities are unlikely to pay postdocs overtime, this would raise the effective postdoc minimum to $50,440.
However, some members of Congress are eager to prevent this deal by running out the clock on President Obama. The Congressional Review Act dictates that all "major" rules are delayed for 60 legislative days after they are submitted to Congress and are subject to a "fast track" process for repeal. That process has to end before President Obama leaves office to guarantee a veto of any Congressional resolution of disapproval.
If the Labor Department does not act soon, Congress will reverse this critical protection for millions of workers.
Please consider signing the petition, and then click on the confirmation email, so that we receive an official response from the White House.<http://kos.salsalabs.com/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=BWaBH5y6piKqEE8g5dKdecoUUrMUWVvX>

If you are interested, or have further questions, please contact our corresponding secretary Kathrin (graetz at mit.edu<mailto:graetz at mit.edu>) and come to the PDA meeting.

MIT Excellence Awards and Collier Medal
Please join us as we honor the 2016 recipients of the MIT Excellence Awards and Collier Medal. Everyone at MIT is invited to attend and recognize our colleagues for their exceptional contributions to the Institute.
The MIT Excellence Awards acknowledge our community members' extraordinary efforts to put MIT's goals, values and mission into action. These are among the highest honors awarded to staff by MIT. Professionalism, commitment to best practices and high standards of excellence are at the heart of these awards.
The Collier Medal was created to honor the memory of Officer Sean Collier. On April 18, 2013, Officer Collier was killed in the line of duty while protecting and serving MIT. Exploring Careers in DATA SCIENCE (sponsored by MIT GECD)
Data scientists work with enormous data sets, often from unconventional, unwieldy, nonlinear sources. Some develop innovative technology to work with that data. Some focus on techniques to derive meaningful implications from that data. Job titles vary and may include data engineer, data scientist, statistician, and data analyst. Whatever their title, there is currently a dramatic shortage of these professionals in the country and in the world. During this session, alumni and representatives from different industries will talk about the way their company is using data science, and the career paths opening up in this burgeoning field.

Now in its 67th year, the annual statewide science fair will feature the highest quality projects accomplished by students from across the Commonwealth. We will need more than 300 outstanding judges to donate their time to evaluate these students' work. Some students invest more than 1,000 hours of research in their projects! Just a few hours of your time will help to encourage these young people in their quest for excellence in science and technology. It's an experience that lasts a lifetime!
